All Adventures
Patterns, Places and Possibilities in Beautiful Beaminster 06.06.26
Rain had altered their plans before they had even begun. A walk across the Dorset countryside had seemed the obvious choice but grey skies and steady drizzle encouraged a different kind of adventure. Instead of following footpaths, they followed creativity, setting out to explore Dorset Arts Week and whatever surprises might lie behind gallery doors and in tucked-away studios. They were in Beaminster, Dorset, where they wandered into the 13th century church of St Mary's wh

The Illuminated Manuscript of Lewtrenchard and Coryton 16.05.26
West Devon under rain possesses a strange kind of enchantment. The churchyards in May have this almost impossible softness to them — campion, stitchwort, forget-me-nots, cow parsley, bluebells — all set against a the backdrop of cruel slate and granite. After rain, everything looks painted; colours deepen rather than fade. Moss burns emerald against stone walls. It hugs the trees as they gnarl upwards, unhurried; later, darkening to charcoal. The cow parsley at the lane edge

'Running' the gauntlet, trying to stay on my feet in the mud and look like I mean business🫣 Edit** I did a bit of digging about Sgt J Casey and found this in the Bomber Command archives. Not sure if he is related but, he's remembered here. Putting the link here: Casey, John · IBCC Digital Archive https://share.google/MwYO8nn1b3kW8KVZu Closer to home this weekend — and somehow it felt like slipping into a secret pocket of Somerset I’d driven past a hundred times without ev

Leusdon Magic
On 30th December 2025, we found ourselves on Dartmoor, beginning at Poundsgate and following the River Dart as it slipped and whispered through winter-quiet woodland. A walk shaped by rushing water, layered history, and those quiet, unexpected moments that Dartmoor seems to save for people who take the slower path. That day, the air had that end-of-year stillness to it — the kind that makes you walk more slowly, as if the land itself is speaking and you don’t want to interru

Magical December Walk on Buckland Beacon
What a gorgeous morning on 22nd December 2025 — a low winter sun sparkling over Dartmoor, footpaths turned into channels to scramble, dodging wet patches and a picture-postcard scene in every bramble-skirted step. Buckland Beacon was absolutely breathtaking in the cold sunshine, and the views over the Webburn valley reminded me why this corner of Devon feels so special. At the top of the beacon we came upon the Ten Commandments Stones — two big granite “tablets” carved right

The Interlude...
It's taken 3 years to get back on track! My boots wore out and my walks weren't confined to the coasts so I'd decided not to record them, which is a shame because there are many I should have liked to put on here. So where does that leave me? Here I am at 53. An empty nester, still flying solo and living to my own tune. This year I've definitely come through the other side and I have some great adventures to add. I bought a van, subscribed to OS Maps and decided tha

North East Coast
August 8th 2022 Marsden Bay to Seaburn 3.2m Marsden Rock. I could smell it before I got out of the car! Not a particularly offensive smell but I remembered it well as home to one of England's most important seabird colonies with thousands of pairs of kittiwakes, fulmars, gulls and cormorants. Then I heard them. My 'partner in crime' today reminded me of a field trip there many years ago when we worked on a management plan for the grassy area of magnesian limestone. One of man

Moonfleet
Today we did the Moonfleet Walk. I so liked the sound of that. To be honest we only decided the actual route yesterday but my trusty friend , the good doctor, agreed it was suitably moderate for us with only gentle inclines. Perfect. There is a bit of a story behind the need for a more gentle walk today. 2 weeks ago I went out with the Ramblers Association. 12 miles later I couldn't even walk. I returned with severely blistered feet. Not doing that again! We
